If you would take a closer look at every car dashboard, you would notice that it is packed with a lot of gadgets for measuring. They call this the instrument panel. This helps the driver of the vehicle to be well informed of the current conditions of the car. The pointers in each gauge move to let you know if the item being monitored is still within the limit or exceeding its boundaries. The light indicates some kind of trouble with the car.
The instrument panel is capable of doing this with the help of the engine computer that works hand in hand with the instrument cluster. This engine computer is the one that acquires the needed information from the car and presents them on display for the driver to see via the instrument cluster.
What are these car computer parts that are used in getting information? One of them is the ECU, which checks the temperature of the coolant. There is also the transmission controller that will take care of the vehicle’s speed.
The gathered information from these parts is then distributed and collected in the communications bus. This data being sent by the engine computer contains two parts, which are called the header and data. The header serves as the numeric identification of the data that will be sent. For instance, the temperature data will be dispatched to the communication bus by the car computer. With the header, the communications bus can detect that the information received is about the coolant’s temperature.
The next part is called the data. This is now the numeric value that is corresponding to the exact information value. For example the temperature is 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, the data that is going to be sent to the communications bus is also 200.
This information will then be distributed to the proper gauges of the instrument panel straight from the communications bus. Henceforth, this is the information you will see when you are driving.
Since the instrument panel plays a crucial role for your car, you should make sure that your instrument cluster is performing well. Make time to have it regularly checked, maintained and calibrated for you to be able to get the precise value for you to always stay safe on the road.
This is the whole process on how information are being relayed from the engine computers to the instrument panel to give the reading. With this, you can see that every part of the car is working together to let you know if something is wrong with your car.
